Ask Claude or ChatGPT Where to Camp (MCP Server)
A lot of trip planning starts in a chat now. You describe the weekend you want and go back and forth until it sounds right. The catch was that the chat had no idea where you can actually camp. So we hooked Camprtron up to it.
Key takeaways
- Camprtron runs an MCP server at https://mcp.camprtron.com/mcp. Add it as a connector in Claude or ChatGPT and the chat can use Camprtron's campsite data.
- Looking up a developed campground by name needs no account.
- Searching near a place, checking reservation availability and keeping a saved list need you to sign in to your Camprtron account.
- A search returns the top 10 dispersed sites and the top 10 developed campgrounds, ranked the same way the app ranks them.
- We record which tool ran and how long it took. We do not record the places, campgrounds or dates you ask about.
What is the Camprtron MCP server?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call outside tools while you chat. Claude and ChatGPT both support it.
The Camprtron MCP server gives those assistants a handful of tools that read the same campsite catalog the Camprtron app uses: dispersed sites on public land and developed campgrounds, in all 50 states. When you ask about camping, the assistant can call Camprtron and answer from real data instead of guessing from whatever it read on the internet a few years ago.
How do you add Camprtron to Claude?
In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector. Name it Camprtron and paste https://mcp.camprtron.com/mcp as the URL. Make sure the URL ends in /mcp, or Claude cannot register it.
Turn the connector on in a chat from the tools menu. The first time you ask for something that needs an account, Claude shows a Connect button. It opens the Camprtron sign-in page, and after you sign in you go straight back to the chat.
How do you add Camprtron to ChatGPT?
In ChatGPT, custom connectors live behind developer mode. Open Settings, then Apps and Connectors, then Advanced settings, and turn on developer mode. Then create a connector with https://mcp.camprtron.com/mcp as the URL.
Developer mode is not on every ChatGPT plan. If you do not see it, your plan does not offer custom connectors yet. In a chat, it helps to say "use Camprtron" the first time so ChatGPT picks the right tool.
What can you ask Camprtron in a chat?
Ask the way you would ask a friend who camps a lot. "Free camping within two hours of Boise." "Anything open at Big Meadows the second weekend of July?" "Does that campground take reservations, and will a 22 foot trailer fit?" The assistant turns that into a Camprtron search, a campground lookup or an availability check.
A search returns the top 10 dispersed sites and the top 10 developed campgrounds near the place you name, inside a distance or drive-time range. Each one comes with its score, an estimated drive time, the road type, the nearest town and a note on whether your trailer fits. That note is a warning only. It never removes a site from the list.
You can also ask for the full details of one site, check reservation availability for a campground and a date range, and save a site to your Camprtron list or take it off. Your saved list is the same one you see in the app.
Example prompts to try
- “Find free dispersed camping within two hours of Boise that a 22 foot trailer can reach.”
- “What developed campgrounds near Asheville take reservations?”
- “Look up Big Meadows campground in Virginia. Who runs it and how long an RV fits?”
- “Is there an opening for 2 nights at that campground starting the second Friday of July?”
- “Show me the details for the top dispersed site, then save it to my Camprtron list.”
- “What is on my saved Camprtron list?”
Do you need a Camprtron account to use it?
Not for everything. Looking up a developed campground by name needs no account at all. You get where it is, who manages it, whether it takes reservations, what it offers and the longest vehicle that fits, plus a link to its Camprtron page.
Everything else needs you to sign in: searching near a place, site details, availability and your saved list. It is the same account you use in the app. If your trial or subscription has ended, search stops working but the other tools keep going, and the assistant tells you it is the account, not an outage.
The Camprtron MCP tools
| Tool | What it does | Needs |
|---|---|---|
lookup_campground | Looks up a developed campground by name: manager, county, nearest town, reservations, amenities and vehicle length. | No account |
search_campsites | Ranks the top 10 dispersed sites and top 10 developed campgrounds near a place, inside a distance or drive-time range. | Account |
get_campsite | Gives the full record for one site: exact coordinates, road type, water, trailheads, hookups and links. | Account |
check_availability | Checks live recreation.gov openings for a developed campground and a date range. | Account |
list_favorites, save_favorite, remove_favorite | Reads and changes your saved Camprtron list, the same list the app shows. | Account |
Can Camprtron check campsite availability in a chat?
Yes, for developed campgrounds that take reservations through recreation.gov. Give it a campground and a date range and it tells you the first date with an opening for the number of nights you want, how many sites are open then, and a link to reserve.
Dispersed sites take no reservations, so there is nothing to check. Some developed campgrounds book through a system Camprtron cannot read yet, and the assistant says so instead of guessing. The check is live every time. Camprtron never stores an old answer and hands it back as current.
What does Camprtron keep private?
Without an account, the lookup returns public facts only, and its location is rounded to about a kilometer. Exact coordinates, scores and rankings come only with a signed-in search.
For our own stats we record which tool ran, which assistant called it, whether it worked and how long it took. We do not record the places, campgrounds or dates you ask about. The tools never show a price or a sales pitch in your chat either. If you want to manage your account, that happens at camprtron.com.
Is it the same data as the Camprtron app?
Yes. The chat tools read the same catalog and run the same ranking as the app. A search in Claude and the same search in the app give the same top sites.
The app is still the better place to look at a map, compare sites side by side or save an area for offline use. The chat is great for the early part, when you are still figuring out where you even want to go. We use both, honestly.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Camprtron connector free?
Adding the connector is free, and so is looking up a campground by name, with no account. Everything else uses your Camprtron account, the same one you use in the app.
Can Claude or ChatGPT book a campsite for me?
No. Camprtron checks live availability and gives you a link to the reservation page, and you book there yourself. Camprtron’s tools cannot spend money or make a reservation.
Does the free version of ChatGPT support the Camprtron connector?
Not when we tested it. Custom connectors need developer mode in ChatGPT, and the free plan did not show that option. Claude lets you add a custom connector from Settings.
Does it work in Claude Code or other MCP clients?
Yes. Any MCP client that supports remote servers over HTTP with OAuth sign-in can use https://mcp.camprtron.com/mcp. In Claude Code, run: claude mcp add --transport http camprtron https://mcp.camprtron.com/mcp
Does Camprtron see my location?
No. A search uses only the place you type in the chat, such as a town or a park. Camprtron never asks the assistant or your device for your location.
Why does the assistant ask me to connect or sign in?
Searching, site details, availability and your saved list belong to your Camprtron account, so the assistant shows a Connect button the first time you ask for one of them. Sign in once and the chat continues where it stopped.
Which states does the Camprtron MCP server cover?
All 50. It reads the same catalog as the Camprtron app: dispersed sites on National Forest, BLM and other public land, and developed campgrounds from federal and state sources.
